Beautiful Weather Lake Arenal

The weather has returned to absolutely gorgeousness. I admit i was getting tired of the rain, though well used to the rain having lived some years in the Pacific Northwest of the USA and many years here on Lake Arenal in northwest Costa Rica, land of forests, beaches and laid back lifestyles. But thank the cosmos for bringing sun and warmth and light and joy back to our part of the world so that I can get off this computer and start walking in the jungles again. When it is sunny here on Arenal Lake, there is no other place on planet earth that I think of being, of traveling to, of living at.

I think that since its such a nice day that I am going to get on my motor cycle and take a long ride around the lake to visit old friends and make new ones. I will stop in Tilaran for lunch and then head over to Hotel Tilawa for home brewed beer or two. I could spend three or four days touring the lake communities but I must check my email and Facebook and twitter every now and then so I can stay up with my friends!

Cacao Nicaragua Beverage Delight

On a recent trip to Nicaragua I discovered a tasty healthy beverage: cacao. My first taste of this delightful filling drink was in the central park of Granada, where for about $1 the Kiosk kitchen served a tall ice filled glass of milk mixed with cacao powder and sugar. Every day I would rush to the park and order a Cacao to enjoy. In San Juan del Sur I searched for Cacao and finally found a small restaurant on the north side of the beach that serves excellent Nicaraguan food for a fair price and served an even tastier version of this National Favorite drink.

I have bought the Cacao powder and brought it back to my home on Lake Arenal in Costa Rica only to be disappointed that the flavor is nothing like I expected. Now I am on the search for the perfect cacao recipe. Do you know how it is made?

As best I can gather, one acquires raw cacao seeds, which are the source for chocolate. Also one would gather fresh vanilla and cinnamon and some say also chile and maybe even corn meal. Grind the cacao seeds to powder and roast in an oven (with or without the vanilla and cinnamon ?) then put in a blender with fresh raw cows milk and sugar to taste. Serve with ice as only when it’s ice cold does it taste right.

I can tell you that this drink is healthy and invigorating, aside from the added sugar. I feel stronger and more energetic and my bedroom activities are seeing a bright side too !

My new drink – Nicaraguan Cacao.

Managua Nicaragua Adventures

I have often fallen in love with the beautiful women of Nicaragua. I met most of my Nicaraguan friends here in Costa Rica, where they have chosen to live and work. I find the Nicaraguan people to be extremely friendly, smart and very sensual.

Recently I was invited to be a guest at the home of a middle class Nicaraguan family who live in the mountains above Managua, Nicaragua. My earlier visits to Managua have been in the pit of the city, in the heart, the pulse the working districts where heat and filth were the norm.

Farm Fresh Chicken

One of my favorite meals is fresh killed farm fresh chicken roasted over an open fire or baked in my gas oven. There are four different ladies who live down the road who raise these animals on their patios. They are loved and well fed and not injected with any chemicals. I can’t call these chickens organic as the feed does have some vitamins and other chemicals added. But the quality of this meat is superior to anything you can buy in the supermarket.

Today I have started the fire and will be barbecuing an 8 pound bird for dinner. Along with some rice and corn on the cob we will feast. Come on over and join me – just be sure and bring along the beer !

Psychopaths in Costa Rica

It will come as no surprise to any world traveler that we have our share of psychopaths here in Costa Rica just as any great nation of planet earth does. A psychopath is a person who has no emotional attachment to their own actions. That is, they care not how their actions hurt others. They may, in fact, gain great pleasure from watching the misery they inflict with their lies, schemes, thefts and con games.

Why Costa Rica ?

I want to open up a discussion to get your feedback on why you have chosen to move to and live in Costa Rica. There are many reasons to move here, but I’ll bet there are only a few that most people will select from the following few ideas that roll off the top of my head this morning.

I know the reason I moved here was because I was treated as a human by warm loving folks. And the weather is awesome. And the beaches were tons of fun, though now that I’m an old fart i find the ocean to be pleasant but much prefer the mountain living.

So, lets see why someone would want to move to Costa Rica to live. Here are a few reasons:

1) Climate – never too hot or cold

2) Friendly People – even old farts can find love

3) Cost of living – well not any more

4) Natural Beauty

5) Health – lots of yoga retreats

6) Surfing – year round great waves

7) Sex

8) Business Opportunities – ahem !

9) Red Tape

10) Food – fresh raw foods fruits vegetables meats milk

11) Medical and dental care

12) own your own hobby farm or condo

The coffe is running down and i’m out of ideas. Please send me your ideas to add to this list to

Arenal Gets New Children’s Playground

Behind the Banco National de Costa Rica in Nuevo Arenal in the small park you will now find a children’s play structure nearing completion. This is a great idea to provide the kids and youth an opportunity to have fun on jungle gyms and swings as did most of the expat community growing up in the rich white world of the USA and Canada. The original plans called for solid wood structure but the current build is poorly engineered and undersized. In discussing this with some of the committee I discovered that the plan changed from buying a professional installed product to a self designed and home built jungle gym. Unfortunately no engineer was consulted and so the nearly $3000 price tag will be another wasted effort on the part of the expat community to try and help the ticos of Arenal.

I predict that play area will have broken equipment within 6 months and that deterioration and neglect will continue unless a plan is put into place to maintain the park and play area on a regular basis.

Plus, who’s stupid idea was it to cut down several tall shade trees in this park in preparation for the installation of the play ground? Dumb Dumb and dumber! I have been told that the association (the town’s council) decided to do this – well whoever is responsible should be fired as cutting of perfectly good shade trees is a tragedy.

I will be following this closely.

Citizens Fight Cel Tower Expansion

Here on the north side of Lake Arenal in Costa Rica we are seeing a grand explosion of tall towers taking over the skies to provide competitive cel services to this small central american nation. Without asking the residents for their opinions on tower placement or health risks, the Costa Rican government has allowed these towers to go up next to schools, shopping centers and homes.

There is now an active group of expats and local citizens organizing to fight the placement of these towers in areas that present danger to our health and beauty. Cel towers cause cancer and other diseases in humans and animals. Therefor the need to place them far from our homes and businesses should be a top priority for any socialist government (yep costa rica is social democracy) but this has not been considered. Already two new towers have been erected in the heart of town virtually next to the existing two towers of ICE.

Do we need more cel phone towers ? Do we need more cancer and health issues ? Do we need more death ?

It would seem that some in government think so – or are so ignorant that they have no idea what they are doing.

Beautiful Weather Lake Arenal

We are so lucky this year to have an extended dry season on lake arenal in costa rica. Well I call it the dry season but it still rains every few days, but the rain is just right. Enough to keep everything green and happy and keep the dirt roads from dusting away in the winds. The days are warm and sunny and the nights a bit balmy as well. We live in a most perfect world here on Lake Arenal. A bit of paradise in a world gone made.

Come on down and join us.

Why Arenal Costa Rica?

I love quiet green flowering forests with paths of light guiding my steps to the hot springs. I love swimming and riding horses and growing vegetables and fruits and playing with my animals. I love quiet days and nights filled with frogs and bird song.

Why not Arenal ?
